DAY 3 TULE – MITLA ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE – MITLA CAVES – CANDLE WORKSHOP – TEOTITLÁN DEL VALLE – MEZCAL FACTORY
Breakfast at the hotel. Free day to enjoy this beautiful city or take an optional tour (not included). Meet at 9 a.m. in the hotel lobby to begin our tour with a 25-minute drive to our first stop, the legendary Tule Tree, a wonderful example of Oaxaca's vast natural wonder. Our next stop, after a 1-hour drive, will be the Mitla Caves, a natural wonder that tells the story of the state's civilization. Among the treasures found during years of research are a series of burnt-red rock pictograms depicting humans, animals, hands, arrows, and what are believed to be maps of the night sky. To reach this incredible place, we will have to walk along the banks of a stream until we reach the beginning of the caves. Just 20 minutes away is the town of Mitla. We'll visit the archaeological site better known as the City of the Dead, characterized by its walls filled with fretwork placed under pressure without any glue. Its town, which blends religious conquest with Aztec traditions, also offers a handicraft market. On our way back, we'll stop for lunch at a restaurant with a buffet menu to sample regional dishes (food included / drinks not included).
We'll continue our tour to visit our first artisan, where she'll explain how to make candles used for important events such as engagements, weddings, or wakes. We'll have the opportunity to make our own wax concha. We'll continue on to our next visit to a mezcal distillery, a unique beverage in the state steeped in tradition in its production and consumption. You'll learn about the extraction and fermentation processes and immerse yourself in the unparalleled work of the artisans of this drink. Finally, we visit Teotitlán del Valle, a town renowned for its wool rug making. We'll see the wool carding, dyeing, and loom work, as well as how a rug of this quality can take anywhere from six months to a year to make. We'll return to the hotel.
