We will continue the tour past the Zócalo and the Cathedral to the Temple of Soledad, the Patron Saint of the City, near the Plaza de los Danzantes, where we can enjoy a delicious regional ice cream to refresh ourselves. We will visit a chocolate factory to learn about the grinding process and the different preparation methods. We'll end the tour by walking along the tourist boardwalk, where you can see various shops, restaurants, museums, and galleries, until we reach the Santo Domingo Church, an example of Mexican Baroque architecture built by the Dominican Order. Day 2: TULE – MITLA ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE – MITLA WINE PRODUCTION – CANDLE WORKSHOP – TEOTITLAN DEL VALLE – MEZCAL FACTORY
We'll meet at 9:00 am in the hotel lobby to begin our day with a 25-minute drive to our first stop, the legendary Tule Tree, a marvelous display of Oaxaca's gigantic nature. Our next stop, after a 1-hour drive, will be the Mitla Caves, a natural wonder that tells the story of the state's civilization. Among the treasures discovered during years of research are a series of burnt-red rock pictographs depicting humans, animals, hands, arrows, and what are believed to be maps of the night sky. To reach this incredible site, we'll walk alongside a stream until we reach the beginning of the caves. Just 20 minutes away is the town of Mitla, where we'll visit the archaeological site better known as the City of the Dead, whose main feature is its walls filled with Greek bricks fitted together without any glue, as well as its town, which combines religious conquest with Mexican traditions and the artisan market. On the way back, we'll stop for lunch at a buffet restaurant to sample regional dishes (food not included). We'll continue our tour by visiting our first artisan, who will explain how candles are made during important events such as marriage proposals, weddings, or wakes. We'll have the opportunity to make our own wax candle. Next, we'll head to a mezcal distillery, a unique beverage in the state and steeped in tradition in its production and consumption methods. You'll learn about the extraction and fermentation process and immerse yourself in the unique craftsmanship of this beverage. Finally, we'll visit Teotitlán del Valle, a town renowned for its wool rug production. You'll see the wool carding, dyeing, and loom work, and understand how crafting a rug from this process can take anywhere from six months to a year. Return to the hotel.
Day 3: TLACOCHAHUAYA, XAAGA AND HUAYAPAM
Meeting at 9:00 am in the hotel lobby to depart for Tlacochahuaya, home to the Temple of San Jerónimo Tlacochahuaya, located in the Central Valleys region. The construction of this glorious work dates back to the mid-16th century and was created by Dominican monks. It was primarily intended for meditation and reflection by the monks, so they sought a place far from the royal road, away from worldly temptation. We will quickly head to the Xaaga Valley, where the abandoned farm is located, which was once very large and wealthy. Its large adobe walls bear witness to the grandeur of this construction in its glory days. The farm has interesting archaeological remains that few people know about and appreciate. On the way back, we will stop at a restaurant serving typical Oaxacan food to taste our delicious cuisine and, why not, dare to try our typical dish, Stone Broth; We will have time to chat and rest in our vehicle before visiting our last place of the day, San Andrés Huayapam is world famous for preserving in its gastronomy a drink that has been made for thousands of years, the locals have baptized it as the drink of the gods; EL TEJATE, although this drink is made in several communities of Oaxaca, San Andrés Huayapam is its birthplace and its women who make it give it a unique flavor that cannot be found anywhere else and where we can enjoy tasting it. Return to the hotel.
Day 4: YANHUITLAN, SAN PEDRO AND PABLO TEPOSCOLULA, TAMAZULAPAM
We will visit Yanhuitlán, where we will see the majestic 16th-century Dominican temple, considered a national heritage site and studied by several researchers. Walking through the former convent of Yanhuitlán allows us to feel the immeasurable power of the Spirit. These immense walls and sober sculptures confront us with the essence of ourselves. Nearby is San Pedro y San Pablo Teposcolula, where we will visit the Cacica's house, built in 1560. It was inhabited by several indigenous chiefs and today houses a children's library. We will visit the Temple of San Pedro y San Pablo, where oil paintings are preserved, discover the Chapel of Santa Gertrudis, which has two Solomonic columns that support the vault, and walk through the main points of this wonderful magical town. Then we will head to Temazulalpam, where we will have the rest of the day to enjoy a natural spa with its waterfalls. At the end of the day, return to the hotel.
Day 5: Temple and Convent of Santo Domingo Etla, Quesillo Workshop and the House
We will meet in the hotel lobby at 8:00 am and depart for the town of Etla, where our artisan cheesemaker will be waiting to explain the process of making quesillo, a fresh cheese. We will also have the opportunity to taste freshly prepared cheese. We will then visit El Casa, a former steelworks and paper mill under the protection of Toledo. We will continue to a Dominican construction site that has left its mark on the Etla Valley, and whose former convent bears the distinctive seal of this religious order, present since the early days of the colonization of the state of Oaxaca. We will continue our tour by visiting the archaeological site of San José el Mogote. A rough road leads us to a 15-meter waterfall. As we continue, the road becomes increasingly greener until a coniferous forest welcomes visitors to this town in the Sierra Norte, part of the Teococuilco community of Marcos Pérez. Just 31 kilometers from Oaxaca City lies the site known as Arroyo Guacamaya, which must be descended on foot upon reaching the town. This mountain community is located at an altitude of 720 meters and offers visitors a splendid panorama and spectacular views. Hiking and mountain biking are available through the forest, where you can observe pines, firs, and oaks.
